As the new college hockey season looms, Dawson Wirth is focused, motivated, and ready for the next chapter of his journey. The former Badlands Sabres standout is preparing to lace up for South Dakota State University (SDSU) ACHA Men’s hockey program, bringing with him a determined mindset and lessons forged through years of junior hockey.
“My goal coming into the season is to play a role in our team’s success,” he said. “Whether that’s contributing on the scoresheet, blocking shots, or bringing energy to the locker room—whatever helps us win.”
Wirth’s commitment to growth is rooted in a simple but powerful mantra: “Get 1% better every day.”
“That’s a lesson I’ve learned through my years of playing hockey,” he explained. “I was always looking for ways to better myself on and off the ice. That mindset really helped me develop—not just as a player, but as a person.”
Before heading to SDSU, he’s putting in serious work to sharpen his game. This offseason, the focus has been on strength and conditioning—critical for staying competitive at the college level.
But physical prep is just one part of the equation. Balancing hockey and academics is no easy feat, and Dawson is taking that challenge head-on.
“I’m making sure my body is in shape and ready for the high demands of the hockey season,” he said. “Mentally, I’m gearing myself up for a long grind. I know college is a lot different than high school, and it’s going to take more effort.”
As he moves forward, the former Sabre carries with him memories of the team that helped shape his game. One moment, in particular, stands out.
“My favorite memory as a Sabre has to be winning our first playoff game at home against Helena,” he recalled. “It was a very surreal feeling—and one I’ll never forget. That kind of atmosphere and excitement is something I’ll carry with me into college hockey.”
With drive, perspective, and a deep love for the game, Dawson Wirth is ready to make his mark at SDSU—one shift, one class, and one percent at a time.
